Volunteer

We need YOU to feed hungry children!

This year, volunteers will prepare and pack more then 4.2 million free, healthy meals for hungry children in Houston.

From large corporate groups to children as young as eight years old, volunteers make our mission possible.

When you volunteer at Kids’ Meals, you may make sandwiches, bag trail mix, pack lunches, decorate lunch bags, sort food donations, or whatever is needed most that day. You can always count on having fun while changing mealtimes and lifetimes!

What will I do when I volunteer at Kids’ Meals?

When you enter the Volunteer Zone, activities change day to day based on what’s needed most, but you can always count on having fun while helping change mealtimes and lifetimes!

You might be assigned to making delicious and nutritious sandwiches! These could be ham, turkey, cheese, peanut butter, or another favorite. Every sandwich you make helps fill a tummy and fuel a child’s growing brain. (If you have allergies, please let our staff know when you arrive.)

You could be on trail mix duty, scooping, bagging, and sealing our homemade snack mix! Each bag you prepare becomes a healthy treat that keeps kids energized and ready to play, learn, and thrive.

You may be asked to bring it all together by packing full lunches. Each bag includes a protein, snack, fruit, and drink, which is everything a child needs for a nutritious meal! You’ll load these bags into our delivery totes, helping send thousands of meals across Houston to kids who depend on us every day.

Deliver a smile with each meal! Decorate lunch bags with uplifting art, riddles, stickers, jokes, and more.

You might be helping us organize and check incoming food donations, assemble grocery bags, or quality-check DIY lunch bags made by our amazing community. This behind-the-scenes work ensures that every item going out to families is safe, nutritious, and ready to brighten a child’s day.

Every day is a little different at Kids’ Meals! You may be asked to decorate lunch bags, put together STEM kits, unload a delivery, or jump in wherever extra hands are needed. No matter the task, your flexibility helps make sure thousands of kids on our routes don’t miss a meal.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the times/days for volunteer shifts?

Volunteer shifts take place Monday-Friday from 9:00am-12:00pm and 1:00pm-3:30pm. You can see more about what volunteers do, and sign up for a shift, here.

For safety reasons, and per health code, all volunteers must wear:
-Closed-toed shoes (your toes will thank you.)

-Hairnet or hat – You might just be testing your sandwich-making skills, so bring your favorite hat or pick up a Kids’ Meals hat at the Welcome Center. You may not need it, but better to be prepared!

-Disposable gloves (we’ll provide these on-site if needed.)

We believe volunteering should be a family experience. If you have children age 8 or older, they are welcome to come and volunteer with you. Each child must have their own Volunteer Hub account and be registered for the volunteer shift. While here, children must be supervised by an adult at all times. Only children age 12 or older can prepare food in the kitchen, but we have several other jobs that kids ages 8-11 can help with.

Donations of DIY bags, decorated bags, food, or other supplies can be dropped off in the back of the building, 8790 Hammerly Blvd, Houston, TX 77080 Monday-Friday from 8:00am-4:00pm. No appointments are necessary, unless you are dropping off juice boxes for the Juice Box Challenge.

Currently, Kids’ Meals delivers free, healthy meals to over 12,000 preschool-aged children per day!

You will often notice pictures of kids and families on our website or social media channels. All families whose pictures appear in our media have signed a release giving us permission to use their photos.
