Nonprofit prepares to double daily meal delivery this summer to meet surging demand
HOUSTON — May 28, 2026 —While the final school bell signals celebration for many, it also marks the beginning of a challenging season for families facing food insecurity. But for 20,000 preschoolers and older siblings, Kids’ Meals steps in.
Kids’ Meals, the nation’s only program delivering free, healthy meals to food insecure preschoolers, is preparing to nearly double its output during the summer months. They need the community’s help to make it possible.
This World Hunger Day, just days before summer break begins and thousands of children lose access to consistent school meals, Kids’ Meals, Inc. is calling on Houston to take action.
“It’s not summer break if you’re hungry,” said Beth Harp, CEO of Kids’ Meals. “Every child deserves the food they need to grow, learn, and thrive. With one in five Houstonians living at or below the poverty line, too many parents are forced to make impossible choices, but feeding their children should never be one of them. For nearly 20 years, this community has shown up for us, and we know Houston will step up again.”
Kids’ Meals successfully met similar demand during Spring Break and is prepared to scale operations again, but rising food and operational costs present ongoing challenges. To ensure no child goes hungry this summer, the organization is asking Houstonians to take action:
- Donate: Just $2 feeds a child for a day.
- Volunteer: Help prepare and pack more than 4.2 million meals this year.
It takes every Houstonian to tackle childhood hunger. Join Kids’ Meals to ensure children across Houston have the meals they need this summer. To learn more or get involved, visit: www.kidsmealsinc.org/take-action.
