On a Mission to End Childhood Hunger in Houston

1 in 4 Houston children live food insecure. Since 2006 we have made and delivered more than 5.7 million meals directly to the homes of Houston’s hungriest children. Our primary year-round mission is to feed children under age 6 who don’t have access to school-based free meal programs. On school holidays our numbers expand as we include the school-aged siblings of our children. We also work to end the poverty cycle by acting as resource navigators connecting them with 49 social service partner programs like healthcare, early education, nutrition, diapers, baby formula, financial, emergency support, clothing, furniture, ESL, GED, job banks, safety, abuse prevention, mental health, and more.

Food Insecurity

Having limited or unreliable access to a sufficient quantity of affordable, nutritious food.

Negative Impact on Children

  • poor performance in school
  • reduced attention in class
  • behavioral issues
  • increased school absences
  • higher risk of obesity
  • higher risk of suicidal or depressive tendencies

Preschool-aged children often fall through the gap of social services addressing food insecurity. We address the hunger and food insecurity for children under age 6 who are not only at a critical developmental stage but cannot access school-based free meal programs.

Each weekday, we deliver approximately  3,400- 6,100  healthy meals to Houston’s hungriest preschool-aged children. When school is out, every child up to age 18  in these homes also receives a healthy meal from Kids’ Meals – up to  6,100  kids per day.

HOUSTON RANKS AS 5th IN THE UNITED STATES FOR CHILDREN LIVING WITH FOOD INSECURITY

Every day in our community there are 88,740 children who live unsure of their next meal. That is 1 out of 4 Houston preschool-aged children!

We are bridging the gap for those families who have little means of obtaining meals for their young children on a regular basis. We are the ONLY home meal delivery program in the nation for poverty-stricken preschool-aged children.

Our free, home meal delivery program concept targeting preschool-aged children originated in the early 1980’s. Kids’ Meals, as it exists today, was created in 2006. With the tremendous support of an established Board of DirectorsAdvisory Board, and community partners, Kids’ Meals has made significant progress towards building an organization that can reach our goal of ending childhood hunger in Houston.
