Free Meals for Children of Furloughed Government Employees

Harris County families financially impacted by the partial government shutdown and struggling to feed their children can turn to Kids’ Meals for free, healthy meals for their children under 6 years old.

The country is in the longest shutdown in US history, and Kids’ Meals is here as a vital resource to help families struggling to feed their preschool-aged children so our youngest and most vulnerable Houstonians won’t suffer,” said Beth Braniff Harp, executive director of Kids’ Meals.

According to Google Trends, the number one Google search related to the government shutdown is for Food Stamps (SNAP).  The government shutdown has reportedly put thousands of low income families at risk of eviction as HUD contracts expire amid shutdown, making already stretched family budgets unmanageable.  Children under 6 don’t have access to free/reduced school-based meals.

Applying for meals for your children is quick and easy, and immediate meals will be given,” said Harp.  “We are here as a resource for families struggling to put meals on the table during this difficult time.”

To receive free meals for children under age 6, download and complete Kids’ Meals’ one page Temporary Meal Support Application and bring it to 330 Garden Oaks Blvd (located in The Heights off of Shepherd and 610 Loop) with your Federal Employee/Contractor ID.  You may also just come and fill out the application available at our offices.
